Terms to Know

Brut - The term used to describe a dry champagne; also used by sparkling wine producers.

Depth - The intensity of color of wine.

Dry Wine - A wine without perceptible sweetness.

Dull - The appearance of a wine that is turbid or cloudy.

Enology - The study of winemaking, also spelled oenology.

Flight - A group of wines evaluated at the same time in a wine tasting.

Sommelier - Pronounced saw-muh-LYAY. The person responsible for organizing and sustaining a wine program in a restaurant setting, also known as a Somm.

Vitis Vinifera - Pronounced VEE-tihs vihn-IHF-uh-ruh. The species of a grape that is most commonly used for producing wine.
